Stop 9
Thornhills and a Hidden Quarry
SX 822 417

After Torcross, the coastal path travels steeply uphill and then skirts inland around the edge of a steep wooded area. This hides an abandoned slate quarry which was worked in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The entrance to the quarry was from the shore, but is now blocked.

The cliffs protect the quarry from the sea and storms, and it is now a nature reserve, containing a luxuriant growth of plants, shrubs and trees.
