Beesands

Down the hill and through the woods, you again meet the coast at a group of houses. These were once the site of some fishermen’s cottages known as Beesands Cellars. The “cellars” in question were once cut into the rock and used for the salt treatment and storage of fish. They are now no longer visible.
Alongside the cottages are the remains of a lime kiln. Limestone was once brought in by boat and burnt to produce lime for fertiliser and building materials.
As you follow the road towards Beesands village, take a look at the football pitch, “The Cellars”, on the right hand side. Until recently (2018), this was the home of Beesands Rovers FC (who now play in Loddiswell). In 2022 Beesands Rovers celebrated their centenary.
On the way into the village is St Andrews, the small “daughter” church of St Michael and All Angels, Stokenham Parish. Here, along with monthly services, on Sundays during the less cold months, volunteers hold cake sales to raise money for charity.
When you get into the village, you will notice “The Cricket Inn“, a feature of Beesands seafront since 1867. It is reported that, since Keith Richards’ family had holidays in Beesands in the 1950s, the first public performance of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards was at The Cricket Inn!
Follow the road right along the seafront and then the South West Coast Path up onto Tinsey Head.
