11 – Tinsey Head

Stop 11
Tinsey Head

The path out of Beesands to Tinsey Head passes through an interesting arrangement of vegetation. The combination of the steep banks on the left and right of the path, and the ‘wind pruning’ effect of winds from the sea have produced a ‘worm hole’ effect.

Tinsey Head is owned by the National Trust. At the top of the hill you get marvellous views of Hallsands and Start Point, and looking back, equally good views of Beesands, with Slapton Sands just visible in the distance.

Further along the path, the dark cliffs of Start Point in the distance reflect a change in geology, from the soft slates you have been walking on up to now, to much harder metamorphic rocks, called mica-schists.
